Wing Zero ver. Nyx

This is my MG Wing Zero Custom ver. Ka “Nyx”.

The inspiration for this model came from Supergiant Game’s depiction of the greek goddess, Nyx. I was playing a lot of Hades in the months leading up to the release of the kit - my plans changed from doing something like the Wing Zero Rebellion to making it a mobile suit invoking the essence of ‘Mother Night’.

Nyx’s design in Hades has a lot of juxtaposition. She has pale skin but wears a dark purple robe. She wears a gold glove on her left hand but only a bangle on her right arm and has a black and gold sash draped across her body. Bright red stings accentuate the pale gold and skull jewerly which also hold orbs of purple crystalized darkness. On the underside of her black hair, you can see the void of space and a few stars.

Trying to bring all of these elements to the model kit presented a lot of challenges in terms of color choice and distribution. I had to mask off a lot of different sections on the chest and skirt pieces to paint the gold accents (using Gaia’s bright gold). The gold stings on the chest and waist bring elegance. Sections on the chest and shoulders that were painted with Gaia purple and NAZCA frost mat black had white added to them for added depth. When I first put the kit together after painting it the model felt like it was missing a little something. That’s when I made the choice to take it back apart to add more gold accents to the right leg and to panel line it with Testors gold eamel paint. This was the first time I’ve ever used a custom panel line wash and I’m happy that I did it.

The hardest part of this build was figuring out how to do the sky underneath the wings. Making the void was a process of putting down a glossy black base and then spraying 3 different metallic paints over it to create a kind of space/void look. Thanks to @R19638194 and their excellent guide on twitter, I was able to achieve what you see in the pictures. It was difficult but worth all of the effort!

I used a glossy finish for the majority of the kit but used a matte finish for the steel white parts to create more variation in the finished prodcut. When taken all together I really feel like this is the best gunpla I’ve ever made. I’m really happy that Bandai finally made a master grade that lives up to the majesty that animation gave WZC! It’s a safe bet that I’ll be returning to this model kit some day to see my original plan realized too, so please look forward to it!
