PK-01S Star Hunter

PK-01S Star Hunter

PK-01S Star Hunter

(PK01-S スターハンター)

The first from the Project Kioku series of my custom SD builds, the Star Hunter was my first completed custom.

Project Kioku

(計画 記憶)

Kioku = Memory = SD

Pronounced as kee-oh-koo, Project Kioku is what I have decided to name my custom SD builds. But why tho? Kioku (記憶) is Japanese for Memory. The first thing I thought of when I heard SD, was the tiny memory cards, and it clicked. Thus, Project Kioku was born.

“Even the bravest of souls dread the sight of the White Scar’s mechanical steed.”

Concept Phase

“I want something to complement the White Scar Gundam, something that would demand your attention…”

The PK-01S Star Hunter (PK01-S スターハンター) is the designated mobile armor of the PK-01W White Scar Gundam. I wanted this build to supplement my first custom. I of course wanted the custom to still focus on the mobile suit, so I decided to give only minor modifications to the mobile armor .

Mighty Fortress. I modified it so that it is able to hold all (if not most) of the White scar’s accessories (kinda like a weaponized fortress of sorts). Also, since the White scar will not fit into the Star Hunter with its shoulder armor, I stored it at the Star Hunter’s sides and put on a different set of shoulder armor on the White Scar while it is aboard the Star Hunter.

Hiding in PAINT sight

As I have mentioned in the White Scar build, this is the phase that took the longest time. I did not know what colors to use except I wanted white to be the primary color. The rainy season in my area did not help either so painting sessions were hard to schedule. After a few days and color revisions in my head, I decided to stick with the current colors it already had and just put them at different areas. So I went with this color scheme:

  • Black

    inner-frame, weapons, thrusters

  • White

    armor

  • Red

    armor highlights, thrusters

  • Silver

    detailing/drybrushing

These are the paints I used for the build:

  • Zurc Primer Surfacer 1500
  • Zurc 2k001 Black
  • Zurc 2k002 White
  • Zurc 2k006 Silver
  • Zurc 2k054 Char Dark Red Metallic
  • Zurc Gloss Clear
  • Bosny No. 191 Flat Clear

Tools:

  • Hobby Knife (blade no. 11)
  • Pin Vise (0.8-3.0mm)
  • Sandpaper (600, 1000, 1500, 2500)
  • Tamiya Super Thin Cement
  • Regular Painter’s Tape (blue masking)
  • TC-802K Airbush Kit

Just keep masking masking masking. SD has terrible part separation which makes masking almost essential. I hated masking but the clean color separation and peeling off the mask is very satisfying…

DETAIL of two builds

The final phase of this build was putting in decals. To match the the White Scar, I also went Katoki and put in as much warning decals I can. I also drybrushed the black areas to make the details pop.

I also decided to place Kanji decals on this and it looked much better than I expected. This is the meaning of the Kanji decals I put:

  • 戰 (Zhàn) - “War”
    • front skirt, side skirt
  • 雙 (Shuāng) - “Pair”
    • left front panel, right rear shoulder
  • 莫 () - “War”
    • right front panel, left rear shoulder

雙莫 (Shuāng Mò) - “Unparalleled”

  • Unlike any other

Where’s the lore?

As I am still working on the lore, I would be updating this once I have polished it. For now, enjoy these shots. If you’ve read this far thank you so much and hope you had as much fun seeing my process as I had fun going through it! If you haven’t already, you can also check out the PK-01W White Scar Gundam build that sits in this mobile armor!
