PK-01W White Scar Gundam

(PK-01W 白い 傷跡 ガンダム)

The first from the Project Kioku series of my custom SD builds, the White Scar Gundam was my first attempt at kitbashing and my first completed custom.

Project Kioku

(計画 記憶)

Kioku = Memory = SD

Pronounced as kee-oh-koo, Project Kioku is what I have decided to name my custom SD builds. But why tho? Kioku (記憶) is Japanese for Memory. The first thing I thought of when I heard SD, was the tiny memory cards, and it clicked. Thus, Project Kioku was born.

Concept Phase

“I wanted an over-the-top close-combat mobile suit. Something so extravagant you cannot believe it’s an SD”

I have straight-built several HGs, RGs, and MGs at this point but I have never built an SD. Wanting to change up my builds, I dove head first into SD and kitbashing.

ASURA. After seeing a build online of a Red Frame with multiple arms, it inspired me to build one myself. It looked really good but I did not have the budget. So I decided to go the SD route and try the concept out first, at least if it fails, I haven’t spent that much yet.

Wait, you’ve never built an SD?!? No, I never actually liked SDs because of the proportions. After this experience however, I now love SDs because of the proportions lol. I thought kitbashing would be easy too, I mean how hard could it be? (it’s harder than you think) and here’s what I went through.

When in doubt, wing it. I had no clear plan of what I wanted to build so I just went ahead and purchased several SD kits but I looked at it with a mindset of harvesting parts off of it. I did this by not looking at the kit as a whole but looking at the kit by its parts. These are the kits I purchased and what I hoped to take from them:

  • SDCS Crossbone Gundam X1

    backpack, faceplate, shoulder armor

  • SDCS RX-78-2 Gundam

    arms, legs

  • SD BB Sengoku Astray Gundam

    sub arms, katanas

  • SD Sangoku Soketsuden Guan Yu Nu Gundam

    head, torso, v-fin, halberd

  • SD Neo Zeong

    mobile armor

Not all SDs are created equal. I learned it the hard way that multiple lines of SD does not necessarily go well together and are built differently (i.e. SDCS has a different build style to that of BB senshi, the regular SD etc.). Until now I’m still confused by the amount of different variations of SDs. So based on what parts I can put together, these are several attempts I had at trying to put together a custom kitbash:

Revise. Revise. Revise. I did not really feel any of the kitbashes I made. Until I was satisfied, I just kept swapping parts out. I even let go of the Asura concept as it would no longer fit in the mobile armor. Eventually I did end up with this:

As one of my heroes once said, Try it yourself!

These are the kits I used for this build:

Kit Parts
SDCS Crossbone Gundam X1 faceplate, waist, feet
SDCS RX-78-2 Gundam head, arms, legs
SD BB Sengoku Astray Gundam shoulder armor, sub-arms, katanas, v-fin
SD Sinanju torso, backpack, beam rifle, bazooka

I love it when a plan comes together. I was now satisfied with how my kitbash looked. I decided to keep the Neo Zeong untouched (important to the lore which I am still writing hehe and you can see it here ), and I even liked the colors it already came in. I just wanted to panel line it and call it a day. However, I already came this far, might as well go all the way. Now it’s time for the next phase.

Existence is PAINT

This is the phase that took the longest time for me. Well for starters, I did not know what colors to use except I wanted to use white as the main color. Another factor was that it was the rainy season in my area so painting was not an option due to high humidity. After a few days and color revisions in my head, I decided to stick with the current colors it already had and just put them at different areas. So I went with this color scheme:

  • Black

    v-fin, inner-frame, weapons, thrusters

  • White

    armor

  • Red

    armor highlights, cameras, thrusters

  • Silver

    detailing/drybrushing

These are the paints I used for the build:

  • Zurc Primer Surfacer 1500
  • Zurc 2k001 Black
  • Zurc 2k002 White
  • Zurc 2k006 Silver
  • Zurc 2k054 Char Dark Red Metallic
  • Zurc Gloss Clear
  • Bosny No. 191 Flat Clear

Tools:

  • Hobby Knife (blade no. 11)
  • Pin Vise (0.8-3.0mm)
  • Sandpaper (600, 1000, 1500, 2500)
  • Tamiya Super Thin Cement
  • Regular Painter’s Tape (blue masking)
  • TC-802K Airbush Kit

Just keep masking masking masking. SD has terrible part separation which makes masking almost essential. I hated masking but the clean color separation and peeling off the mask is very satisfying…

Attention to DETAIL

I decided to finish off my build by adding in extra details. I added a wire that connected one of the head vulcans to the forehead camera which changes it to shoot beams instead of giving a visual feed. I also decided to go Katoki on it and put all the warning decals I could fit into it. Red warning decals on white areas, white warning decals on black areas. Overall, I am pretty happy how it turned out.

Where’s the lore?

As I am still working on the lore, I would be updating this once I have polished it. For now, enjoy these shots. If you’ve read this far thank you so much and hope you had as much fun seeing my process as I had fun going through it! If you haven’t already, you can also check out the PK-01S Star Hunter build , the White Scar’s mobile armor!

The main mobile suit, the White Scar Gundam is a close-range mobile suit equipped with a pair of Beam Sword-Axes and a pair of huge Katanas.

To make up for long range shots, it is also equipped with a Beam Rifle that has a Rocket Bazooka mounted on it.

“Make his hunt worthwhile, or he’ll come for you instead”

“He has never missed any of his hunts, except one. Rumor has it, he is still hunting for the one that got away”

“Let’s make it simple…”

“Turn yourself in or regret not doing so…”

“Either way, I’m collecting your bounty.”

“Instead of running away, you’re coming right to me?”

Until then, see you on the next one!
